The Sun Hydraulics CABGCHN (CABGCHN) is an atmospherically vented counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to control overrunning loads effectively. This valve allows free flow from the directional valve port to the load port through a check valve while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve manages flow from one port to another. The pilot assist at a specific port reduces the effective setting of the relief valve based on the pilot ratio, enhancing operational flexibility without being affected by backpressure at any port due to its atmospheric referencing. The CABGCHN model features a compact design with reduced overall length compared to other models, facilitating easier integration into various systems. It offers similar free-flow check capacity as the CAC and CWC models but has a slightly reduced piloted-open flow capacity. This model is interchangeable with all port counterbalance and pilot-to-open check cartridges of the same frame size but stands out due to its shorter stature. Notable for its robust construction, the CABGCHN incorporates Sun's floating style construction which minimizes potential internal part binding caused by excessive installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations. This design choice ensures consistent performance and reliability. In terms of technical specifications, this model can handle up to 40 gpm (151 L/min) with a maximum recommended load pressure at its highest setting of 5000 psi (350 bar). It also features multiple adjustment settings including an internal hex size for precise control adjustments and is capable of maintaining leakage rates as low as 5 drops per minute at reseat conditions. The CABGCHN is an ideal solution for applications requiring precise motion control where space and high performance are critical.

Atmospherically-vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber is atmospherically referenced.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Free-flow check capacity (port 2 to port 1) is equivalent to the CAC* and CWC* models but the piloted-open flow capacity (port 1 to port 2) is reduced. See performance curve.
  • All 3-port counterbalance and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size), however, the model CABG has a reduced overall length, allowing for easier packaging.
  • Approximately 1 drop (0,07 cc) of fluid will pass from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber every 4000 cycles.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • This valve has positive seals between all ports.
  • With vented valves, a lower pilot ratio may be required to achieve machine stability compared to non-vented valves.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
