The Sun Hydraulics CABGCHV (CABGCHV) is an atmospherically vented counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to manage the control of overrunning loads effectively. This model ensures free flow from the directional valve port to the load port via a check valve, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve regulates the flow between ports. The pilot assist feature at specific ports reduces the relief valve's effective setting based on a predetermined pilot ratio. Notably, backpressure at any port does not influence the valve's setting due to its spring chamber being atmospherically referenced. This valve is engineered for precise settings adjustment; turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases load, with a full clockwise setting providing significant resistance at 5000 psi (344.7 bar). It boasts compatibility in terms of physical interchangeability with all port counterbalance and pilot-to-open check cartridges for given frame sizes, although it features a reduced length for more straightforward packaging. The CABGCHV model can be directly installed into cavities machined into an actuator housing, which enhances protection and circuit stiffness. It also incorporates Sun’s floating style construction that minimizes internal parts binding that might occur due to excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. Each cycle through this valve allows approximately 0.25 cc of fluid to pass from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber, maintaining operational integrity across numerous cycles. Additionally, this model ensures minimal leakage at reseat—exceeding 90% of set pressure—and offers positive seals between all ports. For systems requiring stability adjustments via pilot ratios, this model accommodates lower ratios effectively compared to non-vented valves, making it versatile for various hydraulic applications needing precise motion control.

Atmospherically-vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber is atmospherically referenced.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
- Free-flow check capacity (port 2 to port 1) is equivalent to the CAC* and CWC* models but the piloted-open flow capacity (port 1 to port 2) is reduced. See performance curve.
- All 3-port counterbalance and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size), however, the model CABG has a reduced overall length, allowing for easier packaging.
- Approximately 1 drop (0,07 cc) of fluid will pass from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber every 4000 cycles.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- With vented valves, a lower pilot ratio may be required to achieve machine stability compared to non-vented valves.
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
