The Sun Hydraulics CABNLHV (CABNLHV) is a 7:1 pilot ratio, vented counterbalance valve that is atmospherically referenced. This product is designed to manage the control of an overrunning load efficiently. It features a check valve that allows free flow from the directional valve port to the load port. Additionally, it utilizes a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve to control flow from port to port. The pilot assist at the specified port reduces the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio, ensuring that backpressure at any port does not affect the valve setting due to its atmospheric referencing. This model incorporates Sun's floating style construction which minimizes internal parts binding caused by excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. It is engineered for direct installation into an actuator housing cavity which enhances protection and circuit stiffness. The CABNLHV supports a maximum recommended load pressure and has specific factory pressure settings established for optimal performance. The design ensures positive seals between all ports and offers adjustments that are simple to handle; turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases the load. Notably, this model's free flow check capacity is equivalent to other models like CAC and CWC, but with reduced piloted-open flow capacity, as detailed in its performance curve documentation. Sun Hydraulics' CABNLHV provides reliable performance in applications requiring precise motion control and is particularly effective in scenarios where vented valves are necessary due to backpressure concerns in the system. This model stands out for its ease of integration, robust construction, and efficient operational capabilities.

Atmospherically-vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber is atmospherically referenced.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Free-flow check capacity (port 2 to port 1) is equivalent to the CAC* and CWC* models but the piloted-open flow capacity (port 1 to port 2) is reduced. See performance curve.
  • Approximately 1 drop (0,07 cc) of fluid will pass from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber every 4000 cycles.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • All 3-port counterbalance and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size), however, the model CABN has a reduced overall length, allowing for easier packaging.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • This valve has positive seals between all ports.
  • With vented valves, a lower pilot ratio may be required to achieve machine stability compared to non-vented valves.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
