The Sun Hydraulics CAIGLGV (CAIGLGV) is an atmospherically vented counterbalance valve with pilot assist designed to control overrunning loads effectively. This valve facilitates free flow from the directional valve port to the load port via a check valve, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve manages flow between these ports. The pilot assist feature at the designated port enhances the valve's functionality by lowering the relief valve's effective setting according to a predetermined pilot ratio. Notably engineered for robust performance, the CAIGLGV has an adjustment feature that allows for clockwise turning to decrease setting and release load, with a full clockwise setting achieving up to 5000 psi (344.7 bar). This model boasts superior design elements such as positive seals between all ports and Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes internal parts binding. This is particularly beneficial in preventing issues arising from excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. The valve's specifications include a capacity of 22 gpm (83.3 L/min), a pilot ratio of 4:1, and it can handle maximum recommended load pressure at its maximum setting of 5000 psi (344.7 bar). Ideal for applications requiring precise load control and stability, this model is interchangeable with other cartridges of the same frame size, ensuring versatility and ease of use in various hydraulic systems. Moreover, its design allows for direct installation into actuator housing cavities which enhances protection and circuit stiffness. With approximately one drop (approximately 0.25 cc) of fluid passing from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber every 100 cycles, this model maintains efficiency and reliability over long operational periods. The Sun Hydraulics CAIGLGV is thus an optimal choice for systems requiring dependable load management with minimal external influence on valve settings due to its atmospheric referencing.

Atmospherically-vented counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio. Backpressure at port 2 does not affect the valve setting because the spring chamber is atmospherically referenced.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is 200 psi (14 bar).
- Approximately 1 drop (0,07 cc) of fluid will pass from the pilot area to the vented spring chamber every 4000 cycles.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- With vented valves, a lower pilot ratio may be required to achieve machine stability compared to non-vented valves.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
