The Sun Hydraulics CBBHCDN (CBBHCDN) is a sophisticated counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to manage overrunning loads in hydraulic systems effectively. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from the directional valve port to the load port, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve manages flow between the ports. The pilot assist at a specific port reduces the effective setting of the relief valve based on a predetermined pilot ratio, enhancing control and stability. The CBBHCDN is engineered to be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure to ensure reliable operation under varying conditions. It includes an adjustment feature where turning clockwise decreases the setting and releases the load, with full clockwise providing minimal pressure settings below 350 psi (24 bar). Notably, backpressure at one port increases the effective relief setting in proportion to both the backpressure and pilot ratio. This model incorporates Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes potential internal binding due to excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. It is designed for direct installation into cavities machined into actuator housings, which can enhance protection and circuit stiffness. The CBBHCDN supports two check valve cracking pressures for flexibility depending on specific application needs related to actuator cavitation. Physically interchangeable with all port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges of a given frame size within Sun's product range, this model ensures versatility and ease of integration into various hydraulic systems. Its design considerations include potential oil pass-through in masterslave circuits and during leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies due to non-positive seals on the pilot section. The CBBHCDN is an essential component for applications requiring precise motion control such as in mobile hydraulics and industrial machinery where stability and load management are critical.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Restrictive valves have no relief capacity other than as a thermal relief.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass between 2 and 20 in³/min./1000 psi (0,03 and 0,3 L/min./70 bar) between port 2 and port 3, depending on load pressure. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
