The Sun Hydraulics CBBHCJV (CBBHCJV) is a counterbalance valve designed for hydraulic systems that manage overrunning loads. This model incorporates a check valve that facilitates free flow from the directional valve port to the load port. It also features a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve which controls flow from port to port. The pilot assist at the designated port reduces the effective setting of the relief valve based on a specific pilot ratio, enhancing the operational flexibility and response of the system under varying load conditions. The CBBHCJV model is crafted to ensure stability and reliability in hydraulic circuits. It has an adjustable setting mechanism where turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting, allowing for controlled release of the load. The maximum setting for this valve is below 500 psi (35 bar), and it can handle backpressure at one port which adds to its effective relief setting in a predictable manner, factored by both the pilot ratio and backpressure intensity. Sun Hydraulics has engineered this valve with a floating style construction to minimize potential internal binding that could result from excessive installation torque or variations in cavity/cartridge machining. This design choice significantly enhances durability and consistent performance. The valve offers different check valve cracking pressures to accommodate various application needs, particularly concerning actuator cavitation issues. Additionally, this model can be directly installed into cavities machined into actuator housings, which provides added protection and improves circuit stiffness. Its physical interchangeability with all port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges of a given frame size adds to its versatility in hydraulic system design. The CBBHCJV model is ideal for applications requiring precise motion control such as in mobile hydraulics and heavy machinery used in construction and industrial settings.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Restrictive valves have no relief capacity other than as a thermal relief.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass between 2 and 20 in³/min./1000 psi (0,03 and 0,3 L/min./70 bar) between port 2 and port 3, depending on load pressure. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
