The Sun Hydraulics CBBHLCN (CBBHLCN) is a meticulously engineered counterbalance valve designed to manage the operation of hydraulic systems with overrunning loads. This valve facilitates free flow from the directional valve port to the load port via a check valve, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve regulates flow between ports. The pilot assist feature at a specific port effectively reduces the relief setting according to a predetermined pilot ratio, enhancing operational control and stability. Key features of the CBBHLCN include an adjustment mechanism that allows for precise control by turning clockwise to decrease setting and release load, with a full clockwise setting achieving less than 50 psi (3.4 bar). It also accounts for backpressure at one port, which adds to the effective relief setting in conjunction with the pilot ratio and backpressure level. Notably, this model does not have positive seals on the pilot section and might allow leakage between ports under certain conditions. The CBBHLCN is designed for robust performance with two available check valve cracking pressures to accommodate different application needs. Its construction incorporates Sun’s floating style design which minimizes internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations. This makes it highly reliable in diverse operating environments. For installations, this counterbalance cartridge can be directly integrated into machined cavities within actuator housings, which enhances protection and circuit stiffness. Physically interchangeable with all port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges of the same frame size, it offers flexibility in use across various hydraulic applications without requiring modifications. Overall, the Sun Hydraulics CBBHLCN counterbalance valve is an essential component for hydraulic systems requiring precise motion control and stability under varying load conditions.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Restrictive valves have no relief capacity other than as a thermal relief.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass between 2 and 20 in³/min./1000 psi (0,03 and 0,3 L/min./70 bar) between port 2 and port 3, depending on load pressure. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
