The Sun Hydraulics CBCARAV (CBCARAV) is a sophisticated counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to manage overrunning loads effectively. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from the directional valve port 2 to the load port 1, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve regulates flow from port 1 to port 2. The pilot assist at port 3 reduces the relief valve's effective setting according to a predetermined pilot ratio, enhancing control and stability in hydraulic systems. The CBCARAV is engineered for precise operation with settings adjustable at least 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure. It allows for manual adjustments; turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases load, with full clockwise settings being less than 200 psi (14 bar). Importantly, backpressure at port 2 influences the effective relief setting, adding to it in proportion to the pilot ratio and backpressure amount. This model also boasts an installation flexibility as Sun counterbalance cartridges can be directly installed into cavities machined in actuator housings. This integration not only protects the components but also improves stiffness within the circuit. The CBCARAV model offers two check valve cracking pressures to accommodate different application needs related to actuator cavitation. Additionally, this valve model does not have positive seals on its pilot section and may allow passage of up to 3 in³/min (45 ml/min) at 1000 psi (70 bar) between ports 2 and 3. This leakage should be taken into account particularly in master-slave circuits or when leak testing of valve/cylinder assemblies is required. For applications involving corrosive environments or special fluid types like phosphate ester fluids, configurations with EPDM seals are available, ensuring durability and resistance against damaging substances. The CBCARAV incorporates Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes internal parts binding — a common issue due to excessive installation torque or machining variations of cavity/cartridge. With its robust design and versatile configuration options, this valve stands out as an essential component for advanced hydraulic control systems.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass up to 3 in³/min.@1000 psi (45 ml/min.@70 bar ) between port 2 and port 3. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
  • Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
  • Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP for external stainless steel components, or /LH for external zinc-nickel plated components. See the CONFIGURATION section for all options. For further details, please see the Materials of Construction page located under TECH RESOURCES.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
