The Sun Hydraulics CBCGCKN (CBCGCKN) is a sophisticated counterbalance valve with pilot assist designed to manage overrunning loads effectively. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from the directional valve's port 2 to the load's port 1, while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve oversees flow from port 1 to port 2. The pilot assist at port 3 reduces the relief valve's effective setting based on the pilot ratio. This product is crucial in applications where precise motion control and load handling are needed, such as in hydraulic machinery and mobile equipment. The CBCGCKN can handle a maximum flow of 15 gpm (60 L/min) and withstands a maximum setting pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar), with factory pressure settings established at a leakage rate of less than 5 drops/min at reseat. It includes an adjustment feature where turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting, facilitating load release. Notably, this model does not have positive seals on the pilot section, which could allow up to 3 in³/min at 1000 psi between ports 2 and 3 - an important consideration for specific circuit configurations. Additionally, this model incorporates Sun's floating style construction that minimizes internal parts binding due to installation torque or machining variations of the cavity/cartridge. It also offers options for corrosion resistance with external stainless steel components (model code suffix AP) or external zinc-nickel plated components (model code suffix LH), enhancing its durability and suitability for corrosive environments. The CBCGCKN is versatile with its interchangeable cartridges across similar frame sizes for different applications, making it a reliable choice for ensuring stable and controlled hydraulic operations.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
- Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass up to 3 in³/min.@1000 psi (45 ml/min.@70 bar ) between port 2 and port 3. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
- Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP for external stainless steel components, or /LH for external zinc-nickel plated components. See the CONFIGURATION section for all options. For further details, please see the Materials of Construction page located under TECH RESOURCES.
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
