The Sun Hydraulics CBCGRKN (CBCGRKN) is a meticulously engineered counterbalance valve designed for controlling overrunning loads in hydraulic systems. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from port 2 to port 1, alongside a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve that regulates flow from port 1 to port 2. The pilot assist at port 3 effectively reduces the relief valve setting proportionally to the pilot ratio, enhancing the operational efficiency and stability of hydraulic circuits. The CBCGRKN model is optimized for applications requiring precise motion control, commonly referred to as an over center or motion control valve. It is crucial for users to set this counterbalance valve at least 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure to maintain system integrity and performance. The design allows for easy adjustments; turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases load, with a full clockwise setting being less than 200 psi (14 bar). Notably, this model does not have positive seals on the pilot section, allowing a pass-through of up to 3 in³/min at 1000 psi (45 ml/min at 70 bar) between ports 2 and 3. This feature is vital in master-slave circuits and when leak testing valve/cylinder assemblies. For enhanced durability in various environments, cartridges with EPDM seals are recommended specifically for systems using phosphate ester fluids. Moreover, the CBCGRKN can be directly installed into cavities machined into an actuator housing which improves protection against external elements and circuit stiffness. With options for corrosion-resistant configurations and a robust design minimizing internal part binding due to installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations, this counterbalance valve is versatile for diverse hydraulic applications while ensuring reliable performance under high pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar) and flows up to 15 gpm (60 L/min).

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.

Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • This valve does not have positive seals on the pilot section and will pass up to 3 in³/min.@1000 psi (45 ml/min.@70 bar ) between port 2 and port 3. This is a consideration in master-slave circuits and in the leak testing of valve-cylinder assemblies.
  • Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP for external stainless steel components, or /LH for external zinc-nickel plated components. See the CONFIGURATION section for all options. For further details, please see the Materials of Construction page located under TECH RESOURCES.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
