The Sun Hydraulics CBDCLBV (CBDCLBV) is a meticulously engineered counterbalance valve designed for controlling overrunning loads in hydraulic systems. This valve integrates a check valve and a pilot-assisted relief valve to manage flow between ports effectively. The check valve permits free flow from port 2 to the load at port 1, while the relief valve controls the flow from port 1 to port 2. Significantly, the pilot assist at port 3 reduces the relief setting based on the pilot ratio, enhancing operational precision. This model is designed with a T2A cavity and belongs to Series 2, indicating its compatibility with specific system requirements. It supports a maximum flow capacity of 20 gpm (80 L/min) and can handle up to a maximum pressure setting of 4000 psi (280 bar), making it suitable for high-pressure applications. The pilot ratio of 3:1 ensures efficient performance across various conditions. For installation, this valve can be directly integrated into an actuator housing, which not only protects the unit but also increases circuit stiffness. It features two check valve cracking pressures, providing flexibility based on specific application needs. The CBDCLBV is constructed using Sun’s floating style design which minimizes internal part binding due to installation or machining variations, ensuring reliable operation and longevity. Operational adjustments are straightforward; turning the adjustment clockwise decreases the setting and releases load pressure, with full clockwise adjustment being less than 200 psi (14 bar). This model also accounts for backpressure at port 2 by adding it to the effective relief setting in proportion to the pilot ratio. Overall, Sun Hydraulics’ CBDCLBV offers robust performance for hydraulic systems requiring precise load control and efficient pressure management under varying conditions. Its interchangeable design across similar frame sizes adds versatility for system designers and maintenance professionals.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
- Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
