The Sun Hydraulics CBEBRAV (CBEBRAV) is a high-performance counterbalance valve with pilot assist, designed to manage overrunning loads effectively in hydraulic systems. This valve allows free flow from port 2 to the load at port 1 while controlling flow from port 1 back to port 2 through a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief mechanism. The pilot assist feature at port 3 modifies the relief valve’s setting based on the pilot ratio, enhancing control over the load. The CBEBRAV is engineered for precision and reliability, supporting maximum load-induced pressures up to 3075 psi (215 bar) and has an overall maximum setting of 4000 psi (280 bar). It incorporates a check valve that prevents reverse flow unless a designated pilot pressure is applied, ensuring stability and safety in operation. The valve's design includes Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes internal parts binding, providing consistent performance even under variable installation conditions or cavity machining discrepancies. This model comes with Viton seals suitable for phosphate ester fluids, though it should not be exposed to petroleum-based fluids as they can degrade the seals. It features multiple settings adjustments including a clockwise turn function to decrease pressure settings and effectively release the load. Importantly, it maintains tight control over leakage with a maximum allowance of 5 drops per minute at reseat, which corresponds to about 85% of set pressure. Designed for versatility in application, all standard-sized Sun counterbalance cartridges including the CBEBRAV can be directly installed into actuator housings. This not only protects the cartridge but also enhances circuit stiffness. The valve also offers options for different check valve cracking pressures catering to specific system requirements regarding actuator cavitation and dynamic response. Overall, the Sun Hydraulics CBEBRAV counterbalance valve is an essential component for advanced hydraulic systems requiring meticulous motion control and robust performance in managing high-pressure loads.

Counterbalance valves with pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting, pilot-assisted relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot assist at port 3 lowers the effective setting of the relief valve at a rate determined by the pilot ratio.
Other names for this valve include motion control valve and over center valve.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
- Backpressure at port 2 adds to the effective relief setting at a ratio of 1 plus the pilot ratio times the backpressure.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
- This valve has positive seals between all ports.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
