The Sun Hydraulics CCCACIV (CCCACIV) is a counterbalance valve designed to manage overrunning loads effectively without pilot assist, ensuring machine stability with its zero pilot ratio. This model facilitates free flow from the directional valve port 2 to the load port 1 while controlling the flow in the opposite direction through a direct-acting relief valve. The valve is set to handle pressures at least 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure, with a full clockwise setting achieving less than 200 psi (14 bar). Notably, this model has been internally modified to nullify the pilot assist area, eliminating any connection to port 3 and making it distinct from pilot-assisted versions. The backpressure at port 2 directly adds to the relief setting of the valve, enhancing stability albeit potentially at some cost to efficiency. The design includes Sun's floating style construction which minimizes internal parts binding due to installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations. The CCCACIV can be installed directly into actuator housings, which allows for added protection and increased stiffness in hydraulic circuits. It offers two check valve cracking pressures for flexibility in application depending on actuator cavitation concerns. All three-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges by Sun are interchangeable within a given frame size, sharing the same flow path and cavity. This model is particularly suited for applications requiring robust load control without pilot pressure influence, promoting consistent operation even under varying backpressure conditions. Its capacity reaches up to 15 gpm (60 L/min), with a maximum recommended load pressure at its highest setting of 3075 psi (215 bar), and a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar). Adjustments can be made easily by turning the adjustment screw counterclockwise up to 3.75 turns for increased settings.

Counterbalance valves without pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • These valves are modified versions of our pilot assisted counterbalance valves. The pilot assist area has been nullified internally. There is no connection to port 3.
  • Backpressure at port 2 is directly additive to the relief setting of the valve.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability. This valve has a pilot ratio of zero. Stability is gained at the expense of efficiency.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP for external stainless steel components, or /LH for external zinc-nickel plated components. See the CONFIGURATION section for all options. For further details, please see the Materials of Construction page located under TECH RESOURCES.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
