The Sun Hydraulics CCCALAN (CCCALAN) is a counterbalance valve designed without pilot assist, specifically tailored to manage overrunning loads in hydraulic systems. This valve features a check valve that permits free flow from the directional valve port 2 to the load port 1, while a direct-acting relief valve regulates flow in the opposite direction, from port 1 to port 2. The CCCALAN is set to operate at a minimum of 1.3 times the maximum load-induced pressure, with an adjustment mechanism that allows for clockwise turning to decrease the setting and release the load. The full clockwise setting results in less than 200 psi (14 bar). This model has been internally modified compared to pilot-assisted counterbalance valves, eliminating any connection to port 3 and nullifying the pilot assist area. It features a zero pilot ratio which enhances machine stability at the cost of efficiency. The reseat capability of this valve exceeds 85% of set pressure under standard conditions. Notably, it can be directly installed into a cavity machined in an actuator housing which enhances protection and circuit stiffness. The CCCALAN is designed for a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) and can handle flows up to 15 gpm (60 L/min). It accommodates two check valve cracking pressures; however, the standard 25 psi (1.7 bar) check is typically recommended unless actuator cavitation is a concern. All components are corrosion-resistant, suitable for use in harsh environments. This model incorporates Sun’s floating style construction that minimizes internal parts binding due to installation torque or machining variations of the cavity/cartridge. Such design considerations ensure reliable operation and longevity of the valve in demanding applications.

Counterbalance valves without pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • These valves are modified versions of our pilot assisted counterbalance valves. The pilot assist area has been nullified internally. There is no connection to port 3.
  • Backpressure at port 2 is directly additive to the relief setting of the valve.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability. This valve has a pilot ratio of zero. Stability is gained at the expense of efficiency.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Corrosion resistant cartridge valves are intended for use in corrosive environments and are identified by the model code suffix /AP for external stainless steel components, or /LH for external zinc-nickel plated components. See the CONFIGURATION section for all options. For further details, please see the Materials of Construction page located under TECH RESOURCES.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
