The Sun Hydraulics CCGARBN (CCGARBN) is a specialized hydraulic counterbalance valve designed for controlling overrunning loads in various hydraulic systems. This model does not include pilot assist, featuring a design where the pilot assist area is internally nullified with no connection to port 3. It operates by allowing free flow from the directional valve port 2 to the load port 1 through a check valve, while flow from port 1 to port 2 is regulated by a direct-acting relief valve. The valve’s adjustment mechanism requires turning clockwise to decrease setting and release load, with full clockwise settings being less than 200 psi (14 bar). The CCGARBN is engineered for stability over efficiency, exhibiting a zero pilot ratio which enhances machine stability at the expense of efficiency. Its design ensures that backpressure at port 2 directly adds to the relief setting of the valve. Notably, this model can reseat at more than 85% of set pressure when standard set, although lower settings might result in decreased reseat percentages. Sun Hydraulics has made this model interchangeable with all other 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges of the same frame size, sharing identical flow paths and cavities. It supports a maximum flow capacity of 60 gpm (240 L/min) and can handle maximum operating pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar). The factory pressure settings are established at an actuation speed of 2 in/min (30 cc/min), and it features an adjustment range requiring up to 3.75 turns counterclockwise to increase the setting. Moreover, this valve incorporates Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes potential internal parts binding due to installation torque or cavity/cartridge machining variations. This robust design approach ensures reliable operation even under varying installation conditions and enhances overall system integrity and responsiveness.

Counterbalance valves without pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2.

  • Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
  • Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
  • Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
  • These valves are modified versions of our pilot assisted counterbalance valves. The pilot assist area has been nullified internally. There is no connection to port 3.
  • Backpressure at port 2 is directly additive to the relief setting of the valve.
  • Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability. This valve has a pilot ratio of zero. Stability is gained at the expense of efficiency.
  • Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
  • All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
  • Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
