The Sun Hydraulics CCIALIV (CCIALIV) is a meticulously engineered counterbalance valve designed to manage overrunning loads in hydraulic systems effectively. This model ensures stability by controlling the flow from port 1 to port 2 through a direct-acting relief valve, while simultaneously allowing free flow in the opposite direction via a check valve. Notably, this valve operates without pilot assist, as the internal modifications have nullified the pilot assist area, eliminating any connection to port 3. The CCIALIV is set to handle maximum load-induced pressures by being calibrated at least 1.3 times higher than these pressures, with an adjustment range that includes a full clockwise setting of less than 200 psi (14 bar). Its unique design contributes significantly to machine stability, thanks to a zero pilot ratio which trades off efficiency for enhanced control and predictability in operation. This valve also boasts compatibility across various setups due to its interchangeable nature with all 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges for a given frame size. It supports up to 120 gpm (480 L/min) capacity and can withstand maximum operating pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar). The installation is facilitated by its design that allows direct integration into machined actuator housings, enhancing both protection and circuit stiffness. Moreover, the CCIALIV features Sun’s floating style construction which minimizes potential binding of internal parts—a common issue caused by excessive installation torque or machining variations of cavity/cartridge. For applications sensitive to actuator cavitation, two check valve cracking pressures are available, with a standard recommendation of using the 25 psi (1.7 bar) check unless specific conditions dictate otherwise. In summary, the Sun Hydraulics CCIALIV counterbalance valve is an essential component for hydraulic systems requiring robust load management without pilot assistance. Its high adaptability and engineered reliability make it suitable for various industrial applications demanding precise control over hydraulic flows and pressures.

Counterbalance valves without pilot assist are meant to control an overrunning load. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while a direct-acting relief valve controls flow from port 1 to port 2.
- Counterbalance valves should be set at least 1.3 times the maximum load induced pressure.
- Turn adjustment clockwise to decrease setting and release load.
- Full clockwise setting is less than 200 psi (14 bar).
- These valves are modified versions of our pilot assisted counterbalance valves. The pilot assist area has been nullified internally. There is no connection to port 3.
- Backpressure at port 2 is directly additive to the relief setting of the valve.
- Lower pilot ratios (pilot gain) promote machine stability. This valve has a pilot ratio of zero. Stability is gained at the expense of efficiency.
- Reseat exceeds 85% of set pressure when the valve is standard set. Settings lower than the standard set pressure may result in lower reseat percentages.
- All 3-port counterbalance, load control, and pilot-to-open check cartridges are physically interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
- Sun counterbalance cartridges can be installed directly into a cavity machined in an actuator housing for added protection and improved stiffness in the circuit.
- Two check valve cracking pressures are available. Use the 25 psi (1,7 bar) check unless actuator cavitation is a concern.
- Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
