The Sun Hydraulics NFDCHBN (NFDCHBN) is a precision-engineered needle valve designed for regulating hydraulic flow with high accuracy. This model features a fully adjustable orifice, allowing users to fine-tune flow rates from completely closed to the maximum orifice diameter. It functions effectively as both a flow control and shutoff valve, although it is not pressure compensated. The NFDCHBN is interchangeable with other 2-port flow control cartridges of the same frame size, although extension dimensions may vary. This needle valve operates by regulating flow in proportion to the square root of the pressure differential across ports 1 and 2, due to its noncompensating nature. The balanced adjustment mechanism ensures ease of use even under high-pressure conditions, while the sharp-edged orifice design minimizes variations caused by changes in fluid viscosity. It supports bidirectional flow, with an optimal path from port 1 to port 2 for compatibility with other controls. The NFDCHBN model is robustly constructed to handle a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) and has a capacity of up to 12 gpm (45 L/min). It features a cavity type T-5A and is part of Series 2 cartridges. Installation requires specific torque settings: valve installation torque ranges from 45 to 50 lbf-ft (61 to 68 Nm), while locknut torque is set between 80 and 90 lbf-in (9 to 10 Nm). The adjustment screw has an internal hex size of 5/32 inches (4 mm), and the locknut hex size is 9/16 inches (15 mm). Weighing approximately .60 lb (.30 kg), this model comes equipped with Viton seals for enhanced durability in various hydraulic systems.

Needle valves are fully adjustable orifices used to regulate flow. They are infinitely adjustable from fully closed up to the maximum orifice diameter. They are not pressure compensated and may be used as flow controls or as shutoff valves.
- All 2-port flow control cartridges are physically and functionally interchangeable (i.e. same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size). However, cartridge extension dimensions from the mounting surface may vary.
- Because needle valves are non-compensating devices, the fixed orifice size will regulate flow through the valve in proportion to the square root of the pressure differential across ports 1 and 2.
- A balanced adjustment mechanism allows for easy adjustment even at high pressures.
- The sharp-edged orifice design minimizes flow variations due to viscosity changes.
- The flow path through this valve is bi-directional. The preferred path is port 1 to 2, to allow interchangeability with other flow controls.
- There is no leakage when the adjustment mechanism is turned to the shut-off position.
- Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
