The Sun Hydraulics RDBALCV (RDBALCV) is a direct-acting relief cartridge designed to serve as a pressure-limiting valve, effectively protecting hydraulic components from pressure transients. This normally closed valve opens to the tank port when the inlet pressure reaches the preset level, thereby throttling flow and limiting pressure rise. The RDBALCV is known for its smooth operation, nearly zero leakage, dirt tolerance, and rapid response time of approximately 2 milliseconds. It features a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) and a capacity of 12 gpm (45 L/min). The valve's design incorporates Sun's floating style construction to minimize internal part binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. This relief cartridge is interchangeable with other 2-port relief cartridges of the same frame size and flow path, making it versatile in various applications such as load-holding scenarios. Its seals are exposed to system pressure, so adjustments must be made without system pressure present. The valve setting can be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw clockwise with an internal hex size of 5/32 inches (4 mm). For optimal performance and repeatability, it is recommended to select a spring range where the desired relief setting falls between midrange and high pressures. The RDBALCV is relatively insensitive to varying oil temperatures and contamination from oil-borne particles. It also accommodates EPDM seals for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids; however, exposure to petroleum-based fluids should be avoided as it can damage these seals. Additionally, backpressure on tank port 2 directly adds to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. The cartridge's compact design includes a locknut hex size of 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) with a locknut torque specification of 80\u201390 lbf-in (9\u201310 Nm).
