The Sun Hydraulics RPGECKN (RPGECKN) is a fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridge designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. This normally closed valve opens quickly when the pressure at inlet port 1 reaches the pre-set level, allowing flow to tank port 2 and throttling it to limit pressure rise. It features low pressure rise versus flow and rapid response times, making it ideal for applications where speed is critical. The valve accepts maximum pressure at port 2, making it suitable for cross-port relief circuits, though users should consider spool leakage in such setups. The main stage orifice is safeguarded by a 150-micron stainless steel screen, ensuring reliable operation. However, it is not recommended for load-holding applications due to potential spool leakage. This cartridge incorporates Sun's floating style construction to minimize internal binding from excessive installation torque or machining variations. It can handle back pressure on tank port 2 directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. For systems using phosphate ester fluids, cartridges with EPDM seals are available; these seals are incompatible with petroleum-based fluids and greases. The RPGECKN cartridge fits into a T-3A cavity and boasts a series 2 capacity of up to 50 gallons per minute (200 liters per minute). It can operate at pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar) with typical response times around 2 milliseconds. The valve's maximum leakage rate is specified as three cubic inches per minute at 110 SUS (24 cSt) under conditions of 1000 psi (70 bar). Users can adjust the setting with five full clockwise turns of an internal hex adjustment screw sized at 5/32 inches (4 mm), while the locknut requires a torque of between 80 and 90 lbf-in (9 and 10 Nm). The model weighs approximately .50 pounds (.25 kg) and uses Viton seal kits for optimal performance in various environments.

Fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridges are normally closed, pressure-limiting valves used to protect hydraulics components from pressure transients. Fast opening and closing is gained at the expense of smoothness. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to limit the pressure rise. These valves have low pressure rise vs. flow and are very fast.

  • All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits. If used in cross port relief circuits, consider spool leakage.
  • Main stage orifice is protected by a 150 micron stainless steel screen.
  • Not suitable for use in load holding applications due to spool leakage.
  • Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Cartridges configured with EPDM seals are for use in systems with phosphate ester fluids. Exposure to petroleum based fluids, greases and lubricants will damage the seals.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
