The Sun Hydraulics RPGEFDN (RPGEFDN) is a fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridge designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. These normally closed, pressure-limiting valves are engineered for rapid opening and closing, prioritizing speed over smoothness. When the inlet port 1 reaches the set pressure, the valve opens to tank port 2, throttling flow to manage pressure rise effectively. The RPGEFDN model features low pressure rise versus flow and offers exceptional response times of approximately 2 milliseconds. It is crucial to note that these cartridges are not suitable for load-holding applications due to spool leakage. The RPGEFDN valve is physically and functionally interchangeable with other 2-port relief cartridges of the same frame size, making it versatile in various setups. It can accept maximum pressure at port 2 and is suitable for cross-port relief circuits; however, spool leakage should be considered in such applications. The main stage orifice is protected by a robust 150-micron stainless steel screen. For optimal performance, back pressure on tank port 2 adds directly to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. Cartridges with EPDM seals are intended for systems using phosphate ester fluids; exposure to petroleum-based fluids can damage these seals. The Sun floating style construction minimizes internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. Additional specifications include a cavity size of T-3A, series 2 capacity of up to 50 gpm (200 L/min), a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar), and a factory pressure setting established at 4 gpm (15 L/min). The valve features an adjustment screw with an internal hex size of 5/32 inches (4 mm) and requires an installation torque between 45-50 lbf ft (61-68 Nm).
