The Sun Hydraulics RPGEFWV (RPGEFWV) is a fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridge designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. These normally closed, pressure-limiting valves open rapidly to relieve excess pressure, though this speed comes at the expense of smooth operation. When the inlet port pressure reaches the valve's preset threshold, it begins to open to tank port 2, throttling flow to mitigate further pressure increases. The RPGEFWV is characterized by its low-pressure rise versus flow and rapid response time of approximately 2 milliseconds. This valve can handle a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) and has a capacity of up to 50 gpm (200 L/min). Physically and functionally interchangeable with other two-port relief cartridges of the same frame size, it fits into a T-3A cavity and incorporates Sun's floating style construction to reduce internal binding risks. It features a main stage orifice protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen but is unsuitable for load-holding applications due to potential spool leakage. The valve accepts maximum backpressure at port 2, which directly adds to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. When configured with EPDM seals, it is compatible with systems using phosphate ester fluids; however, exposure to petroleum-based fluids will damage these seals. The RPGEFWV includes an adjustment mechanism allowing up to five clockwise turns for setting increases and requires specific installation torques: 45-50 lbf ft (61-68 Nm) for the valve itself and 80-90 lbf in (9-10 Nm) for the locknut.
