The Sun Hydraulics RPGTCAN (Material Number: RPGTCAN) is a pilot-operated, anti-shock relief cartridge designed to limit maximum system pressure and control the rate of pressure rise. This valve opens and then ramps closed at a constant speed, independent of settings and flows. It features an adjustable screw that sets the maximum relief and minimum threshold pressures. The RPGTCAN is interchangeable with other 2-port relief cartridges, making it versatile for various applications. It can handle maximum pressure at port 2, making it suitable for cross-port relief circuits but not for load-holding applications. When inlet port 1 pressure exceeds the threshold, it opens to tank port 2, with the pilot section moving forward steadily to increase setting by compressing the pilot spring until a mechanical stop is reached. This valve offers protection against pressure transients in pumps and motors due to sudden load changes, particularly useful for variable displacement pumps where the displacement mechanism may lag behind these transients. It's also beneficial in hydrostatic drives by mitigating jerks from sudden reversals and is suitable for cross-port applications. When paired with a switching device, it mimics ramp characteristics typically provided by proportional valves. Additionally, starting small power units against this anti-shock relief can enhance pump longevity. The RPGTCAN incorporates Sun's floating style construction to minimize internal part binding from excessive installation torque or machining variations. It supports a capacity of 50 gpm (200 L/min) at a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar), with factory settings established at 4 gpm (15 L/min). The response time is typically around 2 ms with a pressure ramp-up time between 200-400 ms. Adjustment requires up to 4.5 clockwise turns, and installation torque ranges from 45-50 lbf ft (61-68 Nm). The valve weighs approximately 1 lb (0.45 kg) and uses Viton seal kits for maintenance.

Pilot-operated, anti shock relief cartridges limit maximum system pressure and also limit the rate of pressure rise. The valve opens and then ramps closed at a constant speed, independent of settings and flows. The adjust screw determines the maximum (relief) setting and the minimum (threshold) setting.

  • All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits.
  • Not suitable for use in load holding applications.
  • When pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the threshold setting, the valve opens to tank (port 2). The pilot section moves forward at a steady rate, increasing the setting by compressing the pilot spring. Maximum setting is achieved when the pilot section reaches a mechanical stop.
  • Valve provides protection for pumps and motors from pressure transients due to sudden load changes, especially variable displacement pumps, since the displacement mechanism is sometimes too slow to catch these pressure transients.
  • Valve provides protection for hydrostatic drives by reducing the jerk caused by sudden reversals. The valve is suitable for cross-port applications.
  • When used with a switching device, the valve can provide the ramp characteristic typically provided by proportional valves.
  • Small power units can be started against an anti shock relief to provide longer pump life.
  • Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
