The Sun Hydraulics RPIEKDN (RPIEKDN) is a fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridge designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. This normally closed, pressure-limiting valve opens rapidly when the inlet port reaches the preset pressure, directing flow to the tank port and limiting further pressure increase. It is characterized by low pressure rise relative to flow and exceptional speed in operation. The cartridge is interchangeable with all 2-port relief cartridges of the same frame size and flow path, except for pilot reliefs. It can handle maximum pressure at port 2, making it suitable for cross-port relief circuits while considering spool leakage. The main stage orifice is safeguarded by a 150-micron stainless steel screen, but it is not suitable for load-holding applications due to spool leakage. Any backpressure on the tank port adds directly to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. The Sun floating style construction minimizes internal binding risks due to installation torque or machining variations. This cartridge fits into Cavity T-16A and has a series capacity of 100 gpm (380 L/min). It operates at a maximum pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar) with typical response times around 2 ms. Valve leakage is minimal, with a maximum of 4 in\u00b3/min (65 cc/min) at 110 SUS (24 cSt) and 1000 psi (70 bar). Adjustments are made using an internal hex screw with five turns required to increase settings. The valve requires an installation torque of 150-160 lbf ft (203-217 Nm), while its locknut torque ranges from 80-90 lbf in (9-10 Nm). Weighing approximately 1.20 lb (0.55 kg), it uses Viton seals with cartridge seal kit number 990016006 available for maintenance or replacement needs.

Description

Fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridges are normally closed, pressure-limiting valves used to protect hydraulics components from pressure transients. Fast opening and closing is gained at the expense of smoothness. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to limit the pressure rise. These valves have low pressure rise vs. flow and are very fast.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits. If used in cross port relief circuits, consider spool leakage.

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.

How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
