The Sun Hydraulics RPIEQAV (RPIEQAV) is a fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridge designed to protect hydraulic components from pressure transients. This normally closed, pressure-limiting valve opens rapidly when the inlet port pressure reaches the valve setting, directing flow to the tank port to limit pressure rise. The design prioritizes speed over smoothness in operation, making it highly responsive with a typical response time of 2 ms. It features a low-pressure rise versus flow and can handle a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar), with a capacity of up to 100 gpm (380 L/min). The valve is interchangeable with other 2-port relief cartridges of the same frame size and can accept maximum pressure at port 2, making it suitable for cross-port relief circuits. However, users should consider spool leakage in such applications, as these valves are not ideal for load-holding due to this characteristic. The main stage orifice is protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen, and the valve incorporates Sun's floating style construction to prevent internal binding from installation torque or machining variations. The adjustment mechanism allows for fine-tuning with five clockwise turns required to increase the setting, and back pressure on the tank port is directly additive at a 1:1 ratio. Installation requires a torque of 150 - 160 lbf ft (203 - 217 Nm), while adjustment screw and locknut sizes are specified for precise assembly. The RPIEQAV model is compact yet robust, weighing approximately 1.20 lb (0.55 kg), and utilizes Viton seals for reliable performance under various conditions.

Fast-acting, pilot-operated, balanced piston relief cartridges are normally closed, pressure-limiting valves used to protect hydraulics components from pressure transients. Fast opening and closing is gained at the expense of smoothness. When the pressure at the inlet (port 1) reaches the valve setting, the valve starts to open to tank (port 2), throttling flow to limit the pressure rise. These valves have low pressure rise vs. flow and are very fast.

  • All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).
  • Will accept maximum pressure at port 2; suitable for use in cross port relief circuits. If used in cross port relief circuits, consider spool leakage.
  • Main stage orifice is protected by a 150 micron stainless steel screen.
  • Not suitable for use in load holding applications due to spool leakage.
  • Back pressure on the tank port (port 2) is directly additive to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio.
  • Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.
