The Sun Hydraulics RQEBMDN (RQEBMDN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker in hydraulic systems. This valve opens completely and remains open when the pressure at inlet port 1 surpasses the set threshold, creating an unrestricted flow path to tank port 2. The valve stays open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds that at port 2, and it resets only when flow ceases and pressure equalizes between ports. It features a main stage orifice protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen. The cartridge is not suitable for load-holding applications and is intended for use on the actuator side of systems, requiring flow cessation for reset. If used on the pump side, pump flow must be halted for resetting. Back pressure at tank port 2 adds directly to the valve setting in a 1:1 ratio. All two-port relief cartridges, except pilot reliefs, are interchangeable within the same frame size due to consistent flow paths and cavity designs. The corrosion-resistant variants are available with external stainless steel or zinc-nickel plating, identified by model code suffixes AP or LH respectively. The floating style construction minimizes binding risks from excessive torque or machining variations. The RQEBMDN has a capacity of 25 gpm (95 L/min) with factory pressure settings established at the kickdown point, supporting up to a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar). It features an impressive response time of approximately 25 ms and minimal leakage rates under specified conditions. Installation requires specific torque settings for both the valve and locknut components, ensuring secure placement within hydraulic systems. A Viton seal kit (990010006) is available for maintenance needs.

Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

For Series 1 cartridges configured with an O control (panel mount handknob), a .75 in. (19 mm) diameter hole is required in the panel.

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.
What are the tolerances on pressure settings for Sun's pressure control valves?	Pressure setting tolerances are listed in our Performance Data page. A link to this page can also be found in the Additional Resources tab of the applicable product page.
How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
