The Sun Hydraulics RQGBFDN (RQGBFDN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker within hydraulic systems. Once the pressure at inlet port 1 surpasses the valve's set threshold, the valve opens completely and maintains an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank port 2. This state is sustained as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds that at port 2. To reset, flow from port 1 to port 2 must stop, and pressure at port 2 must equal or exceed that at port 1. The RQGBFDN model is physically and functionally interchangeable with other two-port relief cartridges of the same frame size, except for pilot reliefs, sharing identical flow paths and cavity configurations. Key features include a main stage orifice protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen and corrosion-resistant options identified by specific model code suffixes for environments prone to corrosion. It incorporates Sun\u2019s floating style construction to reduce internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. The valve has a capacity of up to 50 gpm (200 L/min) with a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar). It is not recommended for load holding applications and is best used on the actuator side of systems where flow can cease for resetting purposes. The RQGBFDN offers a typical response time of approximately 25 ms, with minimal leakage rates under specified conditions. Adjustments can be made using an internal hex screw, with clear specifications provided for installation torque and locknut adjustments. Weighing approximately .50 lb (0.25 kg), it comes with Viton seals as standard in its cartridge seal kit.

Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).

Intended for use on the actuator side of the system as flow through the valve must cease for the valve to reset. If used on the pump side of a system, pump flow must be shut off for the valve to reset.

For Series 1 cartridges configured with an O control (panel mount handknob), a .75 in. (19 mm) diameter hole is required in the panel.

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.

How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
