The Sun Hydraulics RQGBODN (RQGBODN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker in hydraulic systems. This valve activates by completely opening and maintaining an open state once the inlet port pressure surpasses the set valve threshold, allowing unrestricted flow from port 1 to tank port 2. The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds that of port 2, and resets only when flow ceases and pressure at port 2 equals or exceeds that at port 1. These cartridges, except for pilot reliefs, are interchangeable with others of the same frame size, offering consistent flow paths and cavity dimensions. The main stage orifice is shielded by a durable 150-micron stainless steel screen, although these valves are unsuitable for load holding applications. They are intended for actuator-side use in systems where flow cessation is necessary for resetting; if installed on the pump side, pump flow must halt for reset functionality. Back pressure on tank port 2 directly adds to the valve setting at a one-to-one ratio. Corrosion-resistant options are available with external stainless steel or zinc-nickel plated components. The cartridge features Sun's floating style construction to mitigate internal part binding risks due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. With a cavity size of T-3A and series designation of 2, it has a capacity of up to 50 gpm (200 L/min) and operates at a maximum pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar). It offers typical response times around 25 ms with minimal leakage rates under specified conditions. Adjustments can be made via a screw with specific torque requirements, ensuring precise control over performance settings.

Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).

Intended for use on the actuator side of the system as flow through the valve must cease for the valve to reset. If used on the pump side of a system, pump flow must be shut off for the valve to reset.

For Series 1 cartridges configured with an O control (panel mount handknob), a .75 in. (19 mm) diameter hole is required in the panel.

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.
What are the tolerances on pressure settings for Sun's pressure control valves?	Pressure setting tolerances are listed in our Performance Data page. A link to this page can also be found in the Additional Resources tab of the applicable product page.
How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
