The Sun Hydraulics RQGBWDN (RQGBWDN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker in hydraulic systems. This valve opens completely once the inlet pressure at port 1 surpasses the set threshold, allowing an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank port 2. The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 is greater than at port 2, and it resets only when flow ceases and the pressure at port 2 equals or exceeds that at port 1. Notably, this model is interchangeable with other two-port relief cartridges of the same frame size, barring pilot reliefs. It features a main stage orifice shielded by a 150-micron stainless steel screen and is not recommended for load-holding applications. Instead, it should be used on the actuator side of systems since flow must stop for resetting; if used on the pump side, pump flow needs to halt for resetting. The valve's setting can be affected by backpressure on tank port 2 in a direct one-to-one ratio. The RQGBWDN incorporates Sun's floating style construction to reduce potential binding of internal parts due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. It operates with a maximum capacity of 50 gpm (200 L/min) and can withstand pressures up to 5000 psi (350 bar). Typical response time is around 25 milliseconds, with minimal leakage rates under specified conditions. Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).

For Series 1 cartridges configured with an O control (panel mount handknob), a .75 in. (19 mm) diameter hole is required in the panel.

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.
What are the tolerances on pressure settings for Sun's pressure control valves?	Pressure setting tolerances are listed in our Performance Data page. A link to this page can also be found in the Additional Resources tab of the applicable product page.
How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
