The Sun Hydraulics RQIBKDN (RQIBKDN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker in hydraulic systems. This valve kicks completely open and remains open when the inlet port 1 pressure exceeds the valve setting, allowing unrestricted flow from port 1 to tank port 2. The valve stays open as long as the pressure at port 1 surpasses that at port 2; to reset, flow must stop and the pressure at port 2 must equal or exceed that at port 1. The RQIBKDN is interchangeable with other two-port relief cartridges of the same frame size, except for pilot reliefs, sharing the same flow path and cavity. It features a main stage orifice protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen but is not suitable for load-holding applications. The valve is intended for use on the actuator side of systems since flow must cease for resetting; if used on the pump side, pump flow must be halted to reset. Back pressure on tank port 2 adds directly to the valve setting at a 1:1 ratio. The cartridge employs Sun's floating style construction to mitigate internal part binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. With a capacity of up to 100 gpm (380 L/min) and a maximum operating pressure of 5000 psi (350 bar), this model offers typical response times of around 25 ms and minimal leakage rates under specified conditions. The RQIBKDN weighs approximately 1.20 lb (0.55 kg) and comes with an optional Viton seal kit (990016006). Adjustments are made via an internal hex screw with specific torque requirements for installation and locknut adjustments, ensuring reliable performance in various hydraulic applications like portable grain augers for silos where safety is paramount.

Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.
What are the tolerances on pressure settings for Sun's pressure control valves?	Pressure setting tolerances are listed in our Performance Data page. A link to this page can also be found in the Additional Resources tab of the applicable product page.
How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
