The Sun Hydraulics RQIBKMN (RQIBKMN) is a kickdown relief cartridge designed to function similarly to a circuit breaker in hydraulic systems. It operates by kicking completely open and maintaining an open state when the pressure at inlet port 1 surpasses the valve setting, thereby creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank port 2. The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds that at port 2, and it resets only when flow ceases and pressure equalizes between the two ports. This cartridge is physically and functionally interchangeable with other 2-port relief cartridges, except pilot reliefs, sharing the same flow path and cavity for a given frame size. It features a main stage orifice protected by a 150-micron stainless steel screen, ensuring durability but is not suitable for load-holding applications. Intended for use on the actuator side of a system, it requires cessation of flow through the valve for resetting; if used on the pump side, pump flow must be halted to reset. The RQIBKMN model incorporates Sun's floating style construction to prevent internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque or machining variations. It has a maximum operating pressure of up to 5000 psi (350 bar) and can handle capacities up to 100 gpm (380 L/min). The response time is typically around 25 ms with minimal leakage at specified conditions. For corrosion resistance, external components are available in stainless steel or zinc-nickel plating options. Adjustments can be made using an internal hex screw with specific torque settings provided for installation and locknut adjustments. This product is particularly useful in scenarios like portable grain augers where sudden pressure changes necessitate quick relief actions.

Description

Kick-down relief cartridges act similar to a circuit breaker in an electrical system. The valves will kick completely open and remain open once the pressure at the inlet (port 1) exceeds the valve settting, creating an unrestricted flow path from port 1 to tank (port 2). The valve remains open as long as the pressure at port 1 exceeds the pressure at port 2. To reset the valve, flow from port 1 to port 2 must cease and pressure at port 2 must be equal to or greater than the pressure at port 1.

All 2-port relief cartridges (except pilot reliefs) are physically and functionally interchangeable (same flow path, same cavity for a given frame size).

Where would I use a kick-down relief?	One graphic example is on a portable grain auger for silos. When the farmer gets caught in the auger the kick-down relief trips and allows him to escape.
What are the tolerances on pressure settings for Sun's pressure control valves?	Pressure setting tolerances are listed in our Performance Data page. A link to this page can also be found in the Additional Resources tab of the applicable product page.
How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?	There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.
Can I use a kick-down relief for my system relief?	Maybe not. We build in a good amount of overlap in the kick-down reliefs to prevent false tripping. This means they are not as fast as our standard pilot-operated reliefs. A direct-acting relief valve set just above the kick-down relief valve would be good insurance.
Direct acting or pilot operated - what do I use?	Direct-acting valves are used to prevent over pressure, and pilot-operated valves are used to regulate pressure. If you are unsure, use a direct-acting valve. Sun's direct acting valves are very fast, dirt tolerant, stable, and robust. Sun's pilot-operated valves are moderately fast, they have a low pressure rise vs. flow curve, and they are easy to adjust.
